THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS of helping the refugees. One program, under the auspices of PROJECT TIBET, is "pen-friends". Corresponding with a refugee is one of the best ways for Westerners to understand the Tibetan people and learn of their culture. It's possible to write to lamas, monks, students, orphans, children or parents, who are all eager to write back. PROJECT TIBET's hope is that a monthly donation of $20 to $30 accompany each letter, an amount that can help an aged lama continue his religious program, a student to attend school, or a struggling family to provide clothes for the children. Other ways to help include cash donation, which a contributor may earmark for specific purpose.
